Ars Moriendi

Chosen as a KSU VCD 2016 ISTD Submission

I was intrigued by the invitation to take a hard look at death in The Undiscovered Country... one of the ISTD briefs. In my research I came across the Ars Moriendi. Latin for “the art of dying,” the medieval book outlined six rules or steps to follow in order to die well. I immediately saw an opportunity to interpret the Ars Moriendi for modern audiences and developed a book about six new, contemporary rules emphasizing, instead, Modus Vivendi – “a way of living.” I experimented with aging the appearance of the pages, ghosting typography on vellum, and adding textural elements to achieve a sensory experience for the reader.
