Cincinnati Ballet Annual Report

2015 VCD Honors Exhibition, awarded Top Design and Best in Show

After reading many programs from past Cincinnati Ballet productions, one particular letter from Artistic Director Victoria Morgan caught my attention. In it, she expanded on dancer and choreographer Agnes de Mille’s quote (the last line in particular): “The truest expression of a people is in its dance and in its music. Bodies never lie.” After reading Morgan’s inspirational take, my own conclusion was that bodies, especially those of dancers, never stop moving. So, if bodies never lie, truth is in their movement. I set out to create gestural representations of the Cincinnati Ballet’s performances to highlight their year. I visually portrayed dance movement and interpreted the energy and unique mood for the individual ballets with typography. The title of each piece became a work of art on its own, so I made a large stage with the space on each spread for the letters to dance across.
